Development of sustainable
polymer composites

Our primary focus is the development of sustainable polymer composites based on biobased polymers, which have the potential to replace fossil-based polymers in a wide range of applications, particularly in the field of packaging. We employ conventional processing techniques, including melt processing, solution processing, and surface coatings, to manufacture composites that are scalable for industrial production.

Producing these composites with the desired mechanical, thermal, and barrier properties while maintaining the biodegradability of biobased polymers is a challenging endeavour. Our efforts have led to the creation of novel polymer blends and nanocomposites, incorporating various natural and biobased additives, resulting in composites that are industrially compostable, home compostable, and chemically recyclable.

These advanced materials have the potential to replace fossil-based plastics in applications such as packaging, automotive components, low-cost electronic goods, and food packaging. Additionally, our group is actively engaged in projects related to the segregation, recycling, and upcycling of mixed plastic waste originating from both Petro-based and biobased polymers, as well as blends of both. These projects are funded by organizations such as the European Commission, Environmental Protection Agency, Science Foundation Ireland, and industry partners. We are also focused on exploring technical approaches to produce commercial bioplastics.
